Newsletter Briefs Fall 2010 | GreenVest - One Step Ahead

  RECENT ENGAGEMENTS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Mitigation to Begin at National Lead Site
GreenVest secured a multi-million plus dollar mitigation contract associated with the remediation of the former National Lead site in Sayreville, NJ. The initial phase of the mitigation will involve 18+ acres of tidal and freshwater wetland enhancement and creation on GreenVest ‘s Lawrence Brook Mitigation site in New Brunswick, NJ. The site sits in the cradle of this regionally important freshwater/estuarine mixing zone at the confluence of the Lawrence Brook and the Raritan River. The project combines freshwater emergent, forested freshwater and intertidal wetland enhancement targeting habitat improvements for anadromous fish, wading birds and waterfowl. GreenVest helped to accelerate the issuance of critical State and Federal permits required to begin remediation and construction on the National Lead site by providing off site mitigation. GreenVest will prepare the site this winter and construct the mitigation this spring allowing construction to progress on the National Lead site. We will then maintain and monitor the site for the next five years so that our client can focus on their objective of rehabilitating an underutilized brownfield site on the banks of the Raritan River.

GreenVest is also performing contract work for Summit Associates, Blue Vista Properties, Landscapes Unlimited and Panattoni Development. GreenVest consistently solves tough assignments where complex problems must be addressed. The Summit work involves identifying, designing and implementing compensatory mitigation for over 34 acres of wetland impacts. We are delivering a win-win solution by finding and realizing hidden or obscured value for our clients while at the same time solving protracted issues pending between regulatory agencies and the property owner.

More information about the credits that GreenVest currently has available for sale in the FSMB and new credit values coming on line soon may be found on our website at www.greenvestus.com.

  CHESAPEAKE BAY WATERSHED PLAN (continued)
• Our principal Doug Lashley was invited to participate in Governor Martin O’Malley’s Green Jobs Task Force which is targeting the creation of over 100,000 new green jobs by 2015. This is part of GreenVest’s continued efforts to shape policy regarding the successful application of private sector investment to advance the green economy in the Maryland. The next step will be involvement in The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Working Group to advance ecosystem service values within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

• GreenVest is working with the US EPA Chesapeake Bay Program, the US Army Corps of Engineers, MD Department of Natural Resources, US Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service and the MD Department of Environment to promote private sector investment in cleaning up the Bay and meeting Maryland’s Tributary Strategy Goals.
  Chesapeake Bay Watershed Play
  • The EPA released this month the new Bay TMDL standards setting binding limits on nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment discharges throughout the Chesapeake’s 64,000-square-mile watershed in an effort to meet mandated Tributary Strategy Goals by 2025. Written comments will be accepted by EPA and noticed in a pending Federal Register public notice that will also appear on the TMDL Standards will be adopted by December 21, 2010. To submit written comments, contact http://www.epa.gov/reg3wapd/tmdl/ChesapeakeBay/drafttmdlexec.html.

• MDE has already responded to the EPA’s TMDL Standards by issuing Public Notice for the Lower Patuxent Drainage for new TMDL standards. A link to the EPA’s website and the draft TMDL’s can be found on our website at www.greenvestus.com. Greenvest continues to track and attempt to positively influence the policy, legislative and regulatory changes needed to advance development of the ecosystems services markets in Maryland.
  NJ URBAN RESTORATION INITIATIVE
GreenVest is at the forefront of urban restoration in New Jersey targeting both the Raritan and Rahway River Basins. We have targeted numerous privately owned sites in both watersheds for mitigation bank development. GreenVest is presently collaborating with the Princeton Hydro, the Raritan River Initiative, NJDEP, NY/NJ Baykeeper and the US Army Corps of Engineers Harbor Group & Regulatory Branch and others to facilitate the development of privately sponsored urban restoration and mitigation banks. This effort will address the challenges associated with these types of projects including documenting background levels of contamination (particularly metals) in these heavily industrialized watersheds, higher restoration costs and balancing that with better credit ratios. Restoration in the urban and industrialized core of NJ, as targeted in documents such as the Hudson Raritan Estuary Comprehensive Restoration Plan (HRE – CRP), is key to maintaining and improving water and habitat quality. These kinds of restoration projects greatly increase the quality of life for local residents who have little or no access to or limited use of local water resources due to poor water quality. GreenVest is committed to tackling the tough challenges associated urban restoration in the NY/NJ metropolitan area and helping to meet regional programmatic objectives. We are planning to do this throughout the Hudson Raritan Estuary in New York and New Jersey and are developing public/private associations that help achieve the ambitious goals developed in the HRE-CRP.
