Richard S. Herd  

Rick is formally the Program Coordinator for the Water Research Institute (WRI) and National Mine Land Reclamation Center (NMLRC) at West Virginia University. Responsibilities included development and management of research projects related to the restoration and protection of water resources at the state, regional and national level. This included growing switchgrass on mined lands for biofuels; nutrient water quality trading, determining the effects of selenium from mined lands on aquatic resources and developing strategic watershed restoration plans. Rick ensured contractual compliance including all reporting obligations, budget administration and personnel management that met Federal, State and University guidelines for grants totaling $4.0 million the last 4 years at WVU.

From 1995 to 2002 Rick worked at Allegheny Energy ensuring company compliance with water and waste regulatory programs, leading regulatory and legislative response at the state and federal levels and managing environmental research.

Rick holds a B.S. in Biology from Otterbein College, an M.S. in Biology from Indiana University of PA (IUP) and an MS in environmental engineering from the University of Virginia. (UVA). He currently helps GreenVest facilitate performance under many water quality related initiatives throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and is on staff at GreenTrust Alliance, Inc.
