Ecological Restoration Case Studies
Middle and South Tyger Mitigation Sites
>return to case studies
In 1996, GreenVest implemented a Compensatory Mitigation Plan for 64 acres of wetland impacts associated with the construction of a water supply reservoir on the North Tyger River east of Lyman, SC on US Highway 29. This reservoir was proposed by the Startex, Jackson, Wellford, Duncan (SJWD) Water Supply District, Lyman, South Carolina.
Compensation for impacts included both on-site wetland creation of emergent freshwater marsh and bottomland hardwood (BLH) wetlands, and off-site restoration and preservation of BLH wetlands. In addition, wildlife and fisheries habitat improvement and public access to the reservoir was proposed. Total mitigation area is 331 acres (including preservation areas) and includes mitigation at 4 locations to include:
1. Wetland Creation - Emergent Freshwater Marsh Wetlands (Littoral Zone) (14 acres) (Photos 1 and 2)
2. Wetland Creation/Enhancement - BLH Zone (7 acres)
3. Wetland Restoration (Middle Tyger Site - 33 acres) (Photo 3)
4. Wetland Restoration (South tiger Site - 12 acres) (Photo 4)
Presently, the Middle Tyger Mitigation Site has been completed and accepted as successful by all participating agencies including the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The creation at the South Tyger River Mitigation Site has recently been completed and planted with wetland vegetation. This site has been monitored for 5 years to record restoration progress and has received final sign-off.
