GreenVest was invited to participate in the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s Bowie State Seminar Series this fall with a presentation on Nature Photography by our own Jack Turner. Jack’s skills in wildlife and landscape photography made him a natural fit to give this presentation, and Bowie State students gathered in the Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Nursing on the Bowie State campus on November 2 to learn all about nature photography.

Jack’s presentation focused on theories of photography and how to compose an image, and moved into studying your subjects – be it a bird, mammal, or insect – before touching on photo editing and ways to apply photography skills in the environmental field.

The major takeaway that Jack drove home was that you don’t need expensive camera equipment to capture meaningful images; he focused instead on the story that is told through photography, and how using a camera as a storytelling tool can bring communities closer to the wildlife and nature with which we share our spaces.

In total, around 30 students listened intently to the presentation, photographing slides, asking questions, and joining Jack and M-NCPPC’s Tonya Johnson for a nature walk on the Bowie State campus after the talk. ‘Engaging and inspiring’ was the feedback from students and staff alike, who were quick to share their own photography with Jack and ask for feedback and critique to improve their technique.

GreenVest is grateful for strong working partnerships with groups like the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and Bowie State University, and continues to work closely with both groups to keep the next generation of environmental stewards engaged and inspired!
