National Cleanup Day 2023

The third Saturday of every September is National Cleanup Day, held in conjunction with World Cleanup Day. More than 180 countries join forces to pick up trash throughout the month, encouraging partnership for a cleaner Earth.

On September 14, GreenVest Partner Council Fire hosted a cleanup activity at the Annapolis Maritime Museum campus. Along with staff from the Council, the Museum, and the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Project Development Manager Meg Wickless and Ecosystem Restoration Specialist Jack Turner participated in this volunteer outing. The pair helped remove invasive vines from trees, remove trash, and maintain trails throughout the Ellen O. Moyer Nature Park.

The Ellen O. Moyer Nature Park is a 12-acre waterfront park that is home to the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Together, the Park and Museum play a significant role in the community through their educational programming and passive recreation opportunities, hosting over 15,000 adults and children annually. The Park Campus has walking trails, a kayak and canoe launch, indoor and outdoor classrooms, an outdoor amphitheater, and two education and outreach buildings. These elements are integral to the value that the Park Campus provides to the Museum, the City of Annapolis, and the community, so Meg and Jack were happy to aid in Council Fire’s cleanup efforts. While National Cleanup Day has passed, it is not too late to make a difference in your community. Join or organize a cleanup in your neighborhood, or simply pick up litter as you see it – every piece of trash makes a difference!
