This past weekend, our staff had the joy of celebrating another year at GreenVest at our 2022 Holiday Party. Our usual January celebration was canceled due to COVID-19 safety concerns, so we substituted the holiday cheers for a pre-summer toast. Hosted at the Hamilton in Downtown Washington, D.C., our staff enjoyed cocktail hour and a seated dinner, while catching up with colleagues and significant others. Managing Member, Doug Lashley, also announced GreenVest’s sizable donation to a Ukrainian charity in lieu of individual gifts this year. Long-tailed salamander in its natural habitat Every Spring, special pools blossom into existence fed by melting winter snow and seasonal rains. These vernal pools (from the Latin vernalis meaning “of the spring”) provide a host of environmental services to any habitat in which they form. Long-tailed salamander in hand. Log jam With each new stream restoration project, we employ a variety of techniques to bring the stream and its surrounding ecosystem back to health. For the Bacon Ridge Branch Stream Restoration Project, we used a ‘lighter touch’ approach that leveraged on-site materials to create structures that raised the water surface elevation and reconnected the stream to its floodplain. With these higher water elevations, the stream can once again access the floodplain, spreading out and slowing down storm flows while ‘rehydrating’ the previously drained soils and historic wetlands adjacent to the stream channels. GreenVest was proud to present at Prince George’s County Office of Emergency Management’s (OEM’s) recent workshop providing information to prospective 2022 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Assistance applicants. GV, a certified Prince George’s County-Based Small Business was invited to speak by the agency after assisting the County’s Department of the Environment with developing several of these grant applications in 2021. The Alliance has been working for over half a century to educate, protect, and restore our magnificent Chesapeake Bay. Happy Pi Day! GreenVest celebrated yet another Pi Day and was thrilled to be able to do so safely and in person after celebrating at home in 2021. Celebrating Pi Day means coming together, reciting the digits of pi, and paying special attention to the circles we overlook every day.
