  • Greenvest LLC Ecosystem restoration - cicadas and other insects

“…Being found in great multitudes all over the country, their noise made the cow-bells inaudible in the woods.” – Rev. Andreas Sandel, 1715. Though cicadas are mentioned in Homer’s Illiad, the above quote is possibly the first known written description of the Brood X cicada. Brood X was mentioned again 17 years later by botanist John Bartram, and 17 years after that by naturalist Pehr Halm and Maryland’s own Benjamin Banneker, a mathematician, astronomer, surveyor, and naturalist. Although some species of cicadas emerge every summer, others emerge en-masse on 13-year or on 17-year cycles. They don’t appear all at once…

  • Greenvest LLC Flying Eagle

One of our Ecosystem Restoration Specialists, Jack Turner, was engaged by the Monarch Academy of Glen Burnie to present to their first-grade class about birds and birding. Jack’s virtual presentation taught 75 students, numerous teachers, parents, and guardians all about birds’ colors, sizes, diets, habits, habitats, importance, and significance. The students were heavily engaged: asking and answering questions, telling stories, and sharing their favorite bird moments. As Jack puts it: “Having the opportunity to educate the next generation of environmentalists and birders was an experience I wouldn’t pass up. It was rewarding to teach the students about birds, and to…

  • Greenvest LLC Stream Restoration Series - White Paper

Water is the lifeblood of Earth. The arteries, veins, and capillaries it flows through are our oceans, rivers, and streams. Just like the circulatory system within our own bodies, protecting those life-giving waterways is vital for the health of our surrounding ecosystems and, overall, our planet. One of GreenVest’s areas of expertise is stream restoration. By restoring and protecting streams, we rebuild the vitality of the affected area and ensure the waterways connect to maximize the well-being of the entire region. To better illustrate the importance of stream restoration, we wanted to hear from a few individuals about their thoughts…

  • Greenvest LLC Salamander Monitoring

When the ground thaws and the snows melt, amphibians stir from their hibernation. The ground saturates with moisture, and vernal pools form. “Vernal” meaning “occurring in spring,” and “pools” meaning “places where new life will soon be swimming.” It is in these vernal pools that amphibians—frogs, toads, or salamanders—congregate. They only have a limited amount of time to mate and lay their eggs. Those eggs hatch and the young metamorphose into adults, before the vernal pools dry up for the year. These seasonal pools are in high demand by our amphibious friends because their impermanent nature means there are fewer…

  • Greenvest LLC pi day event

On March 14, 1988, Larry Shaw, a physicist at the San Francisco Exploratorium, coordinated a circular march and pie eating extravaganza. Chosen for its resemblance to the first three digits of Pi, 3/14 has since become international Pi Day, and a reason for math and sweets themed parties around the world. Pi (3.1415926…) is the mathematical constant of a circle’s circumference divided by its diameter, which is essential to many formulas in mathematics and physics. Here at GreenVest, we use it often – for example, to get the diameter of a tree or pipe by measuring its circumference. March 14th…
